Dear Fellow Gospel Musician,

k I'm glad to be able to offer you this great product.  I have gotten requests from many musicians on how to play hymns when they don't know how to read music from the hymnal.  The answer in the past has been to just play by ear, but some musicians (especially beginning musicians) don't have an ear that is sophisticated enough to pick out the chords on a hymn well enough to play...assuming, of course, that you can first of all find someone to play it for you so that you can try to copy it.  Now, I am a big advocate for musicians learning how to read music because it opens you up to more opportunities, but I also understand that we live in a world where it is OK not to know how to read music.  There are so many professional musicians out there that are making a great living without having to read music

It is because of this need for musicians to be able to play music that I came up with the idea to make it easier for us to present written music to those that need to read it.  After thinking hard and working with friend of mine, we finally came up with a way to present the music so that it will be easy to understand and would fit nicely in a portable package.  But before we go into this, let me tell you about the friend that helped me out.

"Musician, Composer, Educator, and friend Akeem Downs..."

Akeem Downs is a seasoned player who found his gift for music at an early age.  Professionally, Akeem has a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Winthrop University, in Rock Hill, SC.  At Winthrop, Akeem has served in many capacities, such as the Director of the national-award winning Association of Ebonites Gospel Choir of Winthrop University, served as principle percussionist in the symphonic band, and has performed regularly in student jazz recitals. He is a proud member of the Nu Kappa chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, which is an international professional music fraternity. Akeem currently arranges percussion scores for marching bands. Akeem is a member of the Percussive Arts Society, the International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE) and the National Association of Music Educators (MENC).

I am very grateful to have Akeem on the team because he brings years of teaching and playing experience to the table.  GospelSkillz.com is about more than just playing, it's about building integrity and professionalism in musicians.   To make yourself stand out from the crowd, you MUST possess these qualities to be truly successful in music.

"I can't read music, and I am just learning to play by ear.  How can I play hymns?..."

If you answer "Yes" to any of the questions below, don't worry we got you covered:

  • Are you having trouble reading musical notation out of the hymnal?

  • Is your ear still not yet able to pick out the chords quick enough to learn the hymns you need to learn?

  • Are you having trouble finding someone that will show you how to play certain hymns?

Introducing...
The Gospel Gig Book Volume One
Great Hymns of the Church!!

The Gospel Gig Book Series was designed for the beginning gospel musician that wants to start playing gospel music right away. With the combination Book and CD available in this series, musicians are able to start playing the music that they’ve heard others play for years. The easy to follow format allows musicians that do not read musical notes to quickly pick the chord structures needed to play the songs.  On the accompanying Audio CD, you get to hear Akeem play the Traditional AND Contemporary versions of the song to illustrate the notation in the book.  It is important that musicians learn to read musical notes, but this book allows them to quickly start playing without the frustration of trying to understand musical notation.
