I know it's been a while since my last newsletter and I apologize
for that. I've been busy working on some critical areas to
make your GospelSkillz experience even more rewarding. I will
keep you posted as the new learning features are released. Thanks to all of you who
called and emailed with your support. It really means a lot.
In reference to the spotlight below, I wanted to
take the time to recognize the loss of one of our greatest Jazz/Gospel bass
players, Wayman Tisdale. I know many of you know who Wayman is
(especially bass players), but there are some that do not. I
therefore wanted to do my part to make sure he is recognized and
remembered. He will be truly missed. Check out the
Spotlight Section below for more details.
We have a ton of exciting things planned for the rest of the year
so...
Stay Tuned, Stay Encouraged, and Practice! Practice! Practice!

Tribute to
Jazz/Gospel Great Wayman Tisdale
We
here at GospelSkillz.com want to take this time to pay
tribute to a saved International Jazz and Gospel Bassist,
Wayman Tisdale. Wayman was born and raised in Tulsa,
Oklahoma. He fell in love with the bass guitar while
watching the musicians in his hometown church where his
father was Pastor. It wasn't long before he began playing
the bass for service himself. Before he was a Jazz
legend, he was a three time All-American basketball player
at the University of Oklahoma in the mid 1980s and went on
to play in the NBA for 12 years. In his professional
basketball career, he has played with the Indiana Pacers,
Sacramento Kings, and the Phoenix Suns.
Although Wayman was
serious about his basketball career, he was also very
serious about his music. On his off time he would play,
fellowship, and record with many of the Jazz Greats of
today. It was just a matter of time before Wayman made
the important decision to leave a lucrative career in
basketball to pursue his passion for music.
In February of 2007,
he learned that he had a cancerous cyst below his right
knee after breaking his leg in a fall at his Los Angeles
home. That, however; didn't stop him from chasing his
love for music. Tisdale ended up recording eight albums
with his most recent one being "Rebound" released on June
3, 2008. In his professional music career he has worked
with other great Jazz musicians, such as Dave Koz, Kirk
Whalum, Toby Keith, and Johnathan Butler to name only a
few. On Friday morning, May 15, 2009, Wayman Tisdale
passed away due to complications with cancer. He left
behind a wife and four children. He was truly a legend on
the court and off the court and he will certainly be
missed. Check out these videos we have on his career and
his battle with cancer. Feel free to post any comments
you have to the
Wayman Tisdale Tribute Blog.

This is a video of Bishop
Lester Love showing you that a song can come to you but it's
where your heart is that determines how it is received.
Secular music in the church has been a huge topic of debate
for many decades now. There are many Gospel Artists
that have borrowed from the secular world, but there are
also many secular artists that have borrowed from Gospel.
Some of you older musicians remember how it was in the
days of Sam Cooke. YEP! Now I don't believe that fact alone gives justification for
borrowing from the secular world. Many of us have
thrown a little 2-Pac, Jill Scott, or Erykah Badu in during
service. Personally, I feel that music
is music, words are words, and your heart is your heart.
You have to be in tune with what's going on in service and
if your heart is not in the right place when you deliver
songs from the secular world, you can open up a can of mess
that can be difficult to clean up.
What do you think? Is it ok to sing/play secular music
in the church? Check out the Video on the left and
then
