Dear Fellow Gospel Musician,
k I know you are at a point now where you are about to
EXPLODE! You have been practicing and practicing to
get better, but it seems like all of your hard work is not
paying off. You are
frustrated and you feel like
quitting because of it.
As you continue to see so many musicians that
are able to understand and play the things you want to play, you can't understand why it's so difficult for you to
understand.
First of all, you have to realize that ... You are not alone!
Believe it or not, many musicians ALL OVER THE WORLD feel
the same way.
People even go and seek out professional piano
lessons from a traditional teacher because they can't find
anyone RELIABLE enough to teach them how to play Gospel.
The only problem is that traditional piano lessons focuses
on reading primarily and NOT PLAYING BY EAR. Being
able to play the piano by ear is a respected skill that has
to be nurtured.
Just as with any other respected craft
there IS a method to playing the piano, keyboard, and
organ. Many times the problem that musicians
have is not that they don't practice enough, but the method
that they were introduced to didn't work. In
order for you to get the most out of your learning
experience, you have to have a method that was designed for
your success.
"I
always get nervous when we have revivals or programs that
invite other churches, because they always bring their young
musicians to play... "
Music is primarily an aural skill.
That means that if you have been playing for any length of
time, you should be able to play at least something by ear
... even if it's only Mary had a Little Lamb. As you
increase your length of playing time, you will find that are
able to play more things by ear. My cousin, who is an
older musician said this to me,
"I always get nervous when we have
revivals or programs that invite other churches, because
they always bring their young musicians to play and many of
them at times seem like their showing off and not really
trying to support the movement of God in the service.
But they sound GREAT!"
Unfortunately this is the case in many
churches, they have settled for musicians that can just play
versus those that really have a heart for the church.
My cousin also said to me,
"After the service, when you ask them how they got to
where they were and that you would love to take lessons,
they always blow me off by saying that
they don't have
anything to teach me and that I'm doing good by myself.
If that was the case, I wouldn't have asked them for
lessons!!"
This is another unfortunate reality in
many churches. There are many musicians who have
obviously reached a plateau in their music where they could
certainly be a benefit to someone else. The only
problem is that they are so paranoid that someone is going
to take their job, that they don't want to share anything.
My high school science teacher told me,
"If you teach
something to someone else, you ultimately increase your own
knowledge about that subject."
This is soooo true!!!
The BEST way to increase your knowledge
is to teach it to someone else. This is true because
it forces you to go over your subject matter over and over
again until you know it like the back of your hand.
Also it makes you feel good inside when the people you've
taught and encouraged come back to tell you the successes
they've had. This is why I'm so trilled about music
and education. I know that by helping you to get where
you are, I am really helping myself. If you are
mature enough to understand this, read further so we can
help you unlock the mysteries of reaching your musical
goals.
"Introducing Producer, Musician, Educator, and friend Paul
Whitley..."

Paul
Whitley was born
with a curiosity and thirst for music. He was raised in the
church and started playing piano and organ at the age of 16
when his father asked him “If I ever become a pastor , will
you play for me?" Of course Paul said “Yes”. Since
then Paul has been on the move with his service to the
church and to fellow musicians that want to increase their
level of musicianship.
Currently, Paul is an accomplished
musician and producer whose work can be found on many gospel
projects in stores today. He's had the opportunity to
cross the paths of musicians such as Kevin Bond and Donald
Lawrence. He has also has a great passion for music
that shows in his production AND teaching.
I am very grateful to have Paul on the
team because he brings years of teaching and playing
experience to the table. GospelSkillz.com is about
more than just playing, it's about building integrity and
professionalism in musicians. To make yourself
stand out from the crowd, you MUST possess these qualities
to be truly successful in music.
